Sometimes people argue about what art is. Is it a realistic depiction of something, a la the works of the Renaissance? Or is it abstraction–splatters of paint or a blank white canvas with a black dot in the middle? Or maybe, is it the deliberate distortion of an image in such a way that it still retains its basic self, but with an infusion of a curious aesthetic beauty. That is what Francesco Clemente represents to me. If I could, I’d fill my entire apartment with his oil paintings, drawings and watercolors.
